Gypsum plaster, commonly known as plaster of Paris, is a widely used building material characterized by its ease of use and excellent finishing properties. Derived from gypsum, a naturally occurring soft sulfate mineral, the core component is calcium sulfate dihydrate. Gypsum plaster is produced by heating gypsum to about 150°C, which partially dehydrates the mineral, resulting in a powder. When mixed with water, this powder can be worked into a smooth paste that sets quickly, hardening as it dries. The material is particularly appreciated for its fire-resistant qualities and ability to prevent the spread of fire, making it a popular choice in building construction for coating walls and ceilings. Gypsum plaster does not shrink as it dries and provides a smooth, durable surface that can be easily painted or wallpapered. Additionally, its mold and mildew resistant properties enhance the environmental quality of indoor spaces.
