Gypsum plaster, also known as plaster of Paris, is a type of building material that consists of calcium sulfate hemihydrate. It is created by heating gypsum, a naturally occurring mineral, to remove water molecules, leaving behind a powder that can be mixed with water to form a paste. This paste can then be applied to walls and ceilings for various construction and finishing purposes.
Another advantage of gypsum board is its fire resistance. The gypsum core contains water molecules, which are released as steam when exposed to fire. This process effectively retards the spread of flames and helps to protect the structural integrity of buildings, providing valuable time for occupants to evacuate safely.
